Celebrating the Contradictions of a Church
I like to think of our church as both a refuge and a launching pad. If you think this sounds contradictory, you are right. After all, a refuge shelters one from the world, while a launching pad throws one back into it. Nevertheless, I believe our church serves as both, and for that I am glad. At times in our lives, I believe many of us need a place where we can feel comforted and renewed by the love of God. At other times in our lives, I believe many of us feel called by God to respond to the injustice and suffering that exists in the world. I believe a church, at its best, needs to serve as both refuge and a launching pad. Those who never seek refuge risk burn-out, self-destruction, and spiritual malnourishment. Those who never launch themselves into world risk missing the joy of serving others as well as the sense of purpose and meaning that comes from striving to make the world a better place. If you could use either a refuge or a launching pad in your life, I invite you to join us in the all our cherished, unabashed, contradictions.
Sincerely,
Pastor Brooks.
