Unlikely Combinations

Dear Church Family and Friends,

The day after our wedding Eunita and I stayed in Sacramento to spend time with family members who had flown across the country for our special day.  To entertain them, we went to California’s State Fair.  Among the highlights were a thousand pound pig and a miniature version of San Francisco made with over 100,000 toothpicks and Elmer’s glue.  Personally, I was on a mission to have a deep-fried Twinkie.  What I also happened to discover was a new concoction known as “The Zucchini Weenie.”  This battered and deep-fried state fair delicacy consists of a hollowed-out zucchini with a hot dog inside.  Upon discovering this culinary treasure, I declared aloud, “This will have to be the subject of my next church newsletter!”

Twizzlers or the Cross

New Testament Reading-Mark 8: 27-37

Ostensibly, a wedding should be a high point on the happiness continuum of life, and indeed for Eunita and I it was, but I must confess I may have made a mistake in trying to foster this happiness as we left Vancouver on our drive to Sacramento a few weeks ago.  Eunita and I have done road trips in the past, and one thing we typically enjoy is listening to a good book on CD.  Various members of my family have a decent collection of such CDs, so I asked them to send me something good.  It was at this point that I made the perhaps regrettable suggestion that it be Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.

Save the Domestic Partnership Law

PROTECT ALL WASHINGTON FAMILIES

The Domestic Partnership Law allows Washington families to protect their loved ones and guarantees they will be treated fairly in times of crisis.  It provides essential protections to those who would otherwise live without a safety net.  More than 5,000 couples have registered as domestic partners since 2007.  Some are seniors where one or both partners are over the age of 62.  Often seniors, already low-income,  can’t marry without sacrificing pension benefits.  It also protects gay & lesbian couples, often with children, who are not allowed to get married.  More than 150 congregations and organizations across Washington State support the domestic partnership law.

You can help by letting people know this law is in danger and asking them to Approve Ref. 71 to save the Domestic Partnership Law.  Volunteer locally at: www.approve71vancouver.org or go to the state website at: www.approve71.org.  Help us to guarantee all families are treated fairly.
